Hearing the number

You hear the number on the callback, before the truck rolls. For a pump-out that's a figure inside the range on the pumping page, most standard residential tanks landing between $300 and $600 depending on tank size and how easy the lid is to reach. If the tank turns out bigger than described, or the lid deeper, the new figure is said before the work starts — never after the lid is open. Repairs are quoted after the diagnosis, and drainfield replacement is always its own written quote, because nobody should price a field from the driveway.

Permits

Work that alters a system — new lines, a replacement field, changes to how the system is laid out — goes through TDEC's permit process in Tennessee. We say when a job crosses that line and what the permit means for the schedule. Routine pumping and most repairs inside the tank don't.

Same rates, and the state line

Rates are the same across Montgomery County, Sango to Woodlawn to Palmyra. Oak Grove, Kentucky is served too; its price is set on the callback like any other job.

What's yours to know

• Where the tank and lid are, if you know. If nobody does, locating and digging is labor, and it's priced on the call.
• The last pump date and the tank size, if you have them — they set the interval, and the interval page explains how.
• What goes down the drain. Wipes, grease and heavy disposal use shorten a tank's cycle, and no additive in a jug replaces pumping.
